The forewings are typically dark reddish-brown with a metallic sheen, while the hindwings are a vibrant, metallic red colour. The body is also covered in reddish-brown hairs.
This species is primarily found in the eastern United States, ranging from the Great Lakes region down to Florida and westward to Texas.
It inhabits a variety of habitats, including woodlands, grasslands, gardens, and urban areas.
The caterpillars of Chrysocale principalis are covered in fine hairs and are usually a mix of brown, black, and orange. They feed on a variety of plants, including grasses and herbaceous plants.
Like most moths, this species undergoes complete metamorphosis, which includes egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal (chrysalis), and adult stages.
As with many moths, Eastern Ruby Tigers are primarily active at night.
The adult moths do not feed as their mouthparts are not developed for feeding. Instead, they rely on energy stored during the larval stage.
They are typically seen in flight from late spring to early summer.
The female lays eggs in clusters on host plants. After hatching, the caterpillars feed and grow, eventually pupating and emerging as adults.

Our farmers in Veracruz, Mexico ethically source these beautiful butterflies.

We firmly support the sustainable tropical butterfly collections as long as they take care of conserving the rainforest where they fly and developing responsible conscious trading.
This allows us to support local ranching farms with ethically sourced material and help at the same time collectors and enthusiasts to contribute to understanding and treasuring those species.

Please consider that the specimen you will receive may slightly differ in size, shape or colour from the picture shown as you are purchasing a natural product.

Please note: In our selection of white frames, the inner box frame—the part that creates the depth of the shadow box—is currently only available in black, as white versions are not available at this time.
