As a member of the *Danainae* subfamily within *Nymphalidae*, it is closely related to other *Idea* species, often referred to as tree-nymphs or paper kite butterflies. This species is notable for its striking black-and-white coloration, with translucent white wings adorned by bold black veins and spots. The delicate, slow, and floating flight pattern of *Idea tambusisiana* gives it a graceful, almost ghostly presence as it glides through the dense rainforest canopy. Its wingspan can reach up to 150 mm, making it one of the largest butterflies in its range.

Endemic to Sulawesi, *Idea tambusisiana* inhabits lowland and montane rainforests where it thrives in humid environments rich in host plants, particularly *Tylophora* and other vines from the *Apocynaceae* family. Like other tree-nymphs, it is thought to be toxic due to the chemical compounds absorbed from its larval host plants, deterring predators with its aposematic coloration. It primarily feeds on nectar from forest flowers and exhibits a slow, gliding flight that helps it navigate the dense foliage. Although not extensively studied, habitat destruction due to deforestation poses a significant threat to its population, emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts to protect Sulawesi’s unique biodiversity.

We firmly support the sustainable tropical butterfly collections as long as they take care of conserving the rainforest where they fly and developing responsible conscious trading.
This allows us to support local ranching farms with ethically sourced material and help at the same time collectors and enthusiasts to contribute to understanding and treasuring those species.

Please consider that the specimen you will receive may slightly differ in size, shape or colour from the picture shown as you are purchasing a natural product.

Please note: In our selection of white frames, the inner box frame—the part that creates the depth of the shadow box—is currently only available in black, as white versions are not available at this time.
